Together they create invisible electromagnetic waves which pass through the environment - like ripples on the surface of water.
Eletromagnetic waves have different properties and uses, depending on their wavelength. Radio waves occur within a specific range of wavelengths, and are useful for transmitting sound and digital signals.
Electricity and radio waves can be used to power man-made devices
We see different frequencies of visible light waves as different colors
X-rays can show inside some solid objects
Lower frequency waves such as microwaves cannot change the structure of biological material, but can have a heating effect. This is called non-ionizing radiation. Higher frequency waves like x-rays can change the structure of biological material. This is called ionizing radiation. A great deal of research has been completed, and the findings have been regularly reviewed by government agencies, international health organizations such as WHO and other scientific bodies.
These reviews consistently support the scientific conclusion that, RF fields operated at levels below the limits prescribed by international exposure standards such as ICNIRP present no adverse effects to humans. Since 1995, expert panels and government agencies have performed more than 110 reviews of the scientific evidence regarding health effects from RF exposure.
The WHO in 2004 said:In the area of biological effects and medical applications of non-ionizing radiation approximately 25,000 articles have been published over the past 30 years. Despite the feeling of some people that more research needs to be done, scientific knowledge in this area is now more extensive than for most chemicals. Based on a recent in-depth review of the scientific literature, the WHO concluded that current evidence does not confirm theexistence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields.
Nokia has mainly funded of co-funded research on mobile telephony and health through Mobile Manufacturers Forum. The research programs and projects which have been mainly funded jointly with governmental organizations and other industry fora are listed at MMF website. In Finland, Nokia has also co-funded with Finnish operators and Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes) national research programs 1994-2007. A new program, Wirecom, has recently been launched and it is coordinated by Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (web link to be provided)

Top mobile sat nav software

Most high-end business phones come with GPS and a navigation application pre-installed, but what are the top 10 out there? Does Blackberry Maps beat Nokia Maps? What are the advantages of using Google Maps over paid-for satellite navigation software such as TomTom?
With GPS appearing on more and more devices, it’s important to find the right software to use it, especially if you travel a lot in your job and need to find your way to meetings frequently.
If you use a satellite navigation system currently, it could be time to scrap the bulk and invest in one of the software programs that include voice directions, otherwise, just stick to free software readily available preinstalled or to download on the internet.
We take a look at what’s hot in the world of mobile navigation so you can find your way quickly to your next meeting.

Nanotechnology: The future of mobile phones?

In the competitive market place of mobile phones, new technologies come out over night, change everything, and then become simply “ordinary” a week later.
The entire industry centres on a form of technological Darwinism, where only the strongest and most visible products survive. This theoretically means that a smartphone is susceptible to the same security threats, yet they're continuously left unprotected.
The number of people using smartphones as a work tool has increased hugely in the last three years, and analyst group IDC has predicted that more than 70 per cent of workers will be using their mobile phone to connect to corporate networks within four years.
However, mobile phones are not secured in the same ways as a computer.
David Emm, a member of the Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab says that at a recent IT security event, only 30 per cent of visitors admitted that the security features put in place on their computers covered mobile phones and PDAs.
Graham Cluley, Senior Technology Consultant at Sophos agreed that people don’t secure mobile phones as much as they should

Acer DX900 Dual-SIM mobile review

Carry two mobiles phones? Now you can use two SIM cards in one phone with the first dual-SIM mobile in the UK - the Acer DX900.
Dual SIM mobile phones have been a bit of a trend in Japan and Korea for quite some time, and now the first dual-SIM smartphone has hit our shores in the shape of the Acer DX900.
The DX900 is a re-branded E-TEN DX900, and the first device to come available in the UK, pipping the X960 to the post.
The Acer DX900 is a chunky beast at 106 x 60.5 x 17 mm (HxWxD) and it’s heavy too with 147g behind it, but heavyweight features make up for the size.
The first impressive point to note is that it’s dual-SIM, so a perfect option if you carry a work and personal phone around with you. It can take one 2G SIM card and a 3G module up to HSDPA speeds and both fit snugly behind the battery in the numbered slots. The top bar of the screen is split in two at the top, with the network status for each displayed clearly.
The dual SIMs work together – so if get a call on either number, you can answer it.The device doesn’t have separate phonebooks, or text message inboxes - all contacts and SMS messages are displayed in the same place.

Where the phone and the service come together

GLOBAL - The evolution of applications on our devices has been quite rapid. The first step was of course giving the device extra functionality - the ability to watch certain types of video codecs, or view your messages in a different way. Then it got a bit more involved, bringing little bits of the Internet into your device one bit at a time, bringing things like Maps onto your device, along with info sucked from the Internet and combining it with functionality on the device (GPS) to create a whole new experience. Now though, I think we’ve reached a whole new level.Last year the Forum Nokia folks started releasing APIs for developers to gain access to more of a device’s functions, such as Contacts, Calendar, and even the Camera. Before now I hadn’t seen many examples, but I’ve been playing with the Facebook app on my N97 over the last few days and one feature stood out for me - the ability to access the camera from within Facebook.
This kind of turns the whole photo sharing idea on its head. Before we’d think about taking a picture and later think about sharing it (choosing carefully when and where we share it). Now though we can simply (and I really mean simply) from within the app, fire up the camera, take a picture and share it with our Friends on Facebook. It takes about 30 seconds.

Nokia 6303 classsic review: Euro hatch territory

If we're allowed an automotive metaphor, the Nokia 6303 classic is one of those handsets that will get you from A to B without burning rubber at the traffic lights. It's just how most phones are used: voice call cruising with an occasional red light jump to keep things interesting. If you're not a street racer that eats 8 megapixel and breathes 7.2Mbps, the 6303 classic will be just fine for snapping a photo on the go or browsing the web.
You probably already know where this is going and what the Nokia 6303 is all about - it will bail you out of a tough spot when you need more than calling and texting, but power users won't be pleased. But hey, at this price point, were you really expecting the Bugatti Veyron of mobile phones?

LG Arena in dusty pink waltzes on the scene as an Orange exclusive

The LG's metal-clad KM900 Arena is now available in a new pink finish that without a doubt will have girls waiting in line to get one - and they can get one but only through Orange.
The pinkish LG Arena is certainly not the first popular LG handset that Orange have introduced in more feminine paintjob - take the LG KP501 Cookie, for instance.

If there is some very justified reason that you have no idea what KM900 Arena is all about, here's the brief introduction - a compact full touch handset with a 3-inch WVGA touchscreen, S-Class miltitouch UI, 8 gigs worth of memory, all-round connectivity and a 5 megapixel camera with D1 video recording. The Sony Ericsson fans were treated to some pretty uninspiring shots of the new XPERIA X2 last week but now its reappearance gives more reason to cheer. Wearing a shiny new white and silver dress the XPERIA X2 has this time even posed for a couple of screenshots. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 is yet to be officially announced by the company but rumors about its specs are already spreading like forest fire around the web. Seeing the screenshots we can now safely confirm that it will run on Windows Mobile 6.5 and will sport 3G with HSDPA support. Also based on the previous leak it will come with an 8 megapixel auto focus shooter and a LED flash. The X-panels interface almost doesn't need to be mentioned - this is an XPERIA we are talking about after all.
On the other hand the current leak shows that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X2 will come with 256 MB of RAM and a Qualcomm MSM7200 chipset with a 528 MHz processor just like the XPERIA X1. Previous rumors had it that it will sport 512 MB of RAM and a faster CPU but it seems we won't be that lucky. Let's hope that at least the bit about the 3.5" WVGA OLED display turns out correct.

Samsung E1107 Solar Guru is the first solar powered phone on sale

Samsung launched a solar powered phone but not the one you're thinking of. While we're waiting for the Blue Earth phone, the solar pioneer will be a low-end handset - the Samsung E1107 Solar Guru.
The Samsung E1107, known as Solar Guru or Crest Solar depending on region, is the first solar-powered phone to make its way to the market. The Blue Earth, which was announced back in February is admittedly more exciting but we'll have to wait some more (here's to hoping it's not just vapor ware).
Now before you throw your conventional charger in the bin we should clarify what "solar powered" actually means. 1 hour of solar charging gives you 5 to 10 minutes of talk time (depending on lighting conditions). That alone won't eradicate the need for charging from time to time but if you're in a area where electricity is not guaranteed (say, while camping) this could be a very valuable feature.Aside from that, the Solar Guru seems to be based on the Samsung E1100 but with added FM Radio. The other specs are dual-band GSM, 1.52" 65K CSTN display, MP3 ringtones, flashlight, Mobile Tracker and a 800 mAh battery.
The phone will cost $59 and is already available in India. It will also be launched in Europe, southeast and southwest Asia and Latin America latter this month.

iPhone 3G S gets taken apart, CPU and RAM revealed

Apple were quite keen on emphasizing that the new iPhone 3G S was twice as quick as the original iPhone 3G the other day, but they never mentioned the actual specs of the chipset. Luckily details are starting to appear now and it gets clear that the iPhone 3G S packs a powerful 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU and aProviding a worthy hardware upgrade over the 412 MHz CPU of the iPhone 3G, the 3G S also packs double the RAM of its predecessor (256MB compared to 128MB on iPhone 3G). Also the CPU of the iPhone has received upgrades in more than just speed. The new core manufacturing process is now 65nm instead of 90nm and has put on more L1 cache, bringing along some L2 cache as well.
The iPhone 3G S comes with double the L1 cache of its predecessor and also introduces 256KB of L2 cache, which isn't supported by the ARM11 CPU of the previous gen iPhones. The GPU has been upgraded too and now the iPhone 3G S comes with PowerVR SGX instead of the much toned down PowerVR MBX-Lite. This accelerator can theoretically give some 600% increase in geometry performance and a 150% increased fill rate.Unfortunately, the lower specs make the original iPhone 3G unable to support the OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics API, which will come with the iPhone 3G S. That will give the developers a headache as they have to make their apps support OpenGL ES 1.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0 if they want to get better performance on the iPhone 3G S and backwards compatibility with the original iPhone 3G.

Samsung B7610 Louvre leaks - QWERTY slider with a big screen

The new phone from Samsung that just leaked will appeal to business people and heavy texters alike. It's called the Samsung B7610 Louvre and it's a side-slider with a full QWERTY and a 3.5" AMOLED touchscreen that runs the Window Mobile OS.
The Samsung B7610 runs the TouchWiz interface that Samsung use to cover up WinMo 6.1 OS. It will also be upgradeable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when it comes out in September.
The display sports a sweet 480 x 800 pixels resolution and can theoretically display up to 16M colors. Due to the restrictions of the Windows Mobile 6.1 OS though, the Samsung B7610 will only be able to utilize 65K colors of those colors. Nonetheless that should make for pretty good picture quality as far as our experience shows. The camera on the device is a 5MP one with image stabilization and autofocus but doesn't have flash of any kind. There'd be plenty of space to store your photos too - the Samsung B7610 Louvre comes with 1GB of internal memory and support for microSD cards of up to 32GB (when those eventually became availble).
As far as connectivity goes the Samsung B7610 Louvre is a real champ - quad-band GSM, HSDPA running at up to 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.0, miniUSB as well as an FM radio with RDS. There's also GPS with A-GPS support but we don't know if it'll come with any kind of navigation software preinstalled. In any case, Samsung Navigator (rebranded Route66 software) will be a big plus in the spec list.
The Samsung B7610 Louvre should be available in France in July for Orange and SFR. The price is rumored to be somewhere along the lines of 350 euro (500 US dollars).

Samsung M7600 Beat DJ review: Scratching the beat

The Samsung M7600 Beat is a DJ. They represent some of the biggest mobile services spenders in the UK and so are disproportionately affected by these excessive charges. “High mobile termination rates artificially inflate the cost of calling mobiles from landlines or from mobiles on another network. As such, they are an unfair tax on British businesses that are adding to companies’ running costs in already tough economic times. We support Terminate the Rate’s call to reduce MTRs to closer to their real cost – something like 1p.”
The 'Terminate the Rate' campaign was established by 3 and BT last month, claiming £750 million in excessive termination rates had been paid out to the "big four" networks.
Industry regulator Ofcom began its consultation on the next phase of regulation of MTRs on May 20 and is looking at several options. Final consultation submissions will be accepted until June 29.

Jawbone launches Prime headset

New Bluetooth headset comes in a range of 'Ear Candy' bright colours, exclusive to Carphone Warehouse for one month
Bluetooth headset manufacturer Jawbone launched its latest product, ‘Prime’, exclusively through Carphone Warehouse last week.
The exclusive distribution lasts for one month before rolling out to other high street retailers.
The Prime headset, retailing at £89.99, comes in black, as well as a range of ‘Ear Candy’ colours, such as lilac, lime, scarlet and yellow.
Prime features Jawbone’s noise cancellation technology, reduces wind noise, and pairs with up to eight devices.
The products are also on sale in France, Germany and Norway. The company did have a downloadable option for ActiveSync since 2006, but it was only available for limited handsets and the company told InformationWeek it didn't do a good job publicizing that option. The S60 series phones are all powered by the Symbian operating system, which is optimized the OS for convergence with current multimedia applications as well as making enhancements to its security. "That makes 4 mobile platforms that now have some form of ActiveSync built in that allow server syncing with Exchange - Windows Mobile, PalmOS, iPhone 2.0 and Nokia's Symbian S60 series. Nokia has said the option will be coming to the E and N series devices as well. While this strengthens the Windows Server/Exchange platform, I cannot help but think this weakens the Windows Mobile position. It has bee one of the strengths of the platform distinguishing it from others as an enterprise solution.
